Guide for Writers
Follow this basic structure as a means to create a cohesive essay that is both good to read and to assess.
Abstract
A paragraph at the beginning of the article which gives a succinct summary of the discussion and conclusion. The abstract should give the reader a clear picture of what the article is about, and help them decide if they want to spend time reading it.
The abstract will be readable online, accessible in the Issues pages. Have a look at some examples there if you are unsure as to what is required and to get an idea of the length of the abstract.
Keywords
Select a few individual words which convey the substance of your article. These are used in database searches to help readers find articles related to their particular interests.
Again, look through the Issues pages for examples of what is expected.
Body Text
If you are new to writing articles you may find these notes useful:
- Start with an introduction outlining the course of the discussion.
- Use paragraphs and headings to help the reader follow your ideas.
- If you use clinical material please ensure that you do so with the neccessary permission and that the anonymity of clients is carefully preserved.
- Bring your thoughts together at the end of the article in a simple conclusion.
- Please keep end notes, if used, to a minimum.
- The average length of articles is around 5000 words. A shorter article can be more successful in terms of clarity of thought and readability than more lengthy scripts.
