FAILURE TO LAUNCH: when life seems too hard to engage in. I have worked with many clients who either have never ‘left home’: either they are still in their parents’ homes, or are subsidised to live their lives by their parents; they don’t have a life path of their own, they avoid defining their sexuality or engaging in intimate relationships. Or they did head out from home, and returned feeling defeated by the world. For the counsellor or psychotherapist, it is easy to go into the client’s despair. They can convince us that their lives are over for all practical purposes. It can also feel uncomfortable to hold a hope that seems to tell our clients they are wrong in how they see everything. Yet these clients can be helped in most cases. I will present my experience working with these clients. There will be time for theory, discussion and supervision of participants’ own client work.
