Separateness and Belonging

  • Manchester Gestalt Centre 7 Norman Rd Manchester, M14 5LF United Kingdom (map)

This workshop will explore how ‘the need to be an individual versus the need to belong’ is an existential core dilemma of being human. How do we resolve this dilemma and find a balance and what is the price we sometimes pay to belong? We will look at the Gestalt concepts of confluence and isolation and how separateness and belonging are linked to our sense of self, how we relate to others, identity, difference and culture. “Being a complete individual, ignoring all the demands of family and friends, means complete loneliness and risking the destruction of self, which comes from complete isolation. Being nothing but a member of the group means giving up being a person and becoming an empty space.” Rowe, D. (1988) Beyond Fear. Fontana Paperbacks.
